NOTICES & ANNOUNCEMENTS
Common
Cathedral
The Worship & Outreach Committees’ joint mission this
fall is to invite everyone to participate in Common Cathedral
Services Today at noon.
Common Cathedral is an Outreach mission—making and serving
food to homeless people in the Boston Commons. A quote from their
website captures the essence of the day; “First we are
fed with food that nourishes our bodies, then also from God’s
table we are fed with spiritual food.”
We will leave following the 10:00 a.m. service. Be part of this
good news yourselves. —Michael Vanin • mcvanin1@gmail.com

Sustainable Houses of Worship (SHOW) workshop—Oct. 2nd
Over the past two years, St. Andrew’s has spent considerable
effort improving our environ-mental stewardship efforts through
various upgrades to our building and infrastructure. Our very
successful heating plant and window projects have lowered
heating costs by over $22,000 a year and reduced carbon emissions
by 174,000 lbs. of CO2. On Oct. 2nd, parishioner Jim Blackwell
will be sharing our story as part of a Massachusetts Interfaith
Power and Light presentation here at St. Andrew’s. Called “Sustainable
Houses of Worship” (SHOW), this workshop will allow people
around the Diocese to hear stories of other congregations’ sustainability
work (such as ours), as they dream about what might be possible
in their communities.
The Diocese of Massachusetts is launching a new Green
Grant Initiative this fall to help parishes learn
how to can reduce energy use and cost and evaluate potential
energy saving projects. Grants from $500–$10,000 will be
available; our SHOW workshop is a key part of the initiative.
Members of the St. Andrew’s Property Task Force
will attend along with representatives from neighboring parishes.
Others are most welcome, too.
We’ve made great strides in reducing our use of natural
resources, but there is more that we can do! This fall, St. Andrew’s
will be forming a “Green Team” to continue our energy
conservation efforts and encourage environmental stewardship
in the parish. We’re currently seeking volunteers for this
effort.
The workshop costs $10 per person or $25 for a parish
team of 3–6 people. Jim can arrange for registration.
If you are interested in learning more about the SHOW workshop
and the St. Andrew’s “Green Team,” contact

Adult Programs Holy Living, Holy Dying —Christian
Learning Series
Basic spiritual questions about life and death are common across
cultures, creed, and class in ways that few other topics are:
Is death a continuation of life or simply a finality? How does
the awareness of death inform our lives? On what basis do we
form conceptions of a possible afterlife?
This series will explore our own under-standings of life and
death in comparison with those of different Biblical communities,
and ask whether the traditional theological language of “eternal
life” can be understood as liberating in 21st century contexts.
See you Sunday mornings at 9:00 a.m. in Room 2.
• September 26— Biblical Outlooks on Living,
Dying and Life after Death;
• October 3—Christian Theologies of Eternal
Life.

Gunter Kennel
Next Sunday, Oct. 3, we welcome Gunter Kennel to the organ bench
here at St. Andrew’s where he will be playing our Preludes
and Postlude and conducting the choir.
Gunter
Kennel was born in 1961 in the city of Kaiserlautern, palatinate, not far from
the Ramstein airbase. From 1980–1989, he studied sacred music, organ
and theology in Munich and London, where his organ teachers were Franz Lehrndorfer
and Nicolas Kynaston. Mr. Kennel has participated as well in the masterclasses
of Piet Kee, Ewald Kooiman (Organ), Gerd Wachowski (Improvisation) and John
Eliot Gardiner (Conducting). As a concert organist and conductor he has appeared
all over Europe as well as in Israel and the United States.
Gunter Kennel is also an ordained Protestant pastor and holds
the degree of Doctor of Theology; his doctoral dissertation was
entitled “Early Christian Hymns” (Neukirchener Verlag,
Neukirchen 1995). In the course of the last years he has published
various essays on subjects related to practical theology, theory
of music and organ building. From 1990–1995, Mr. Kennel
was Lecturer of music theory at the Hochschule der Künste;
now he has been serving as a Lecturer of sacred music since 1995
on the Faculty of Theology at the Humboldt-University Berlin.
In 1992 he was appointed Kantor, or organist and choirmaster,
of the Passionskirche and the Kirche Zum Heiligen Kreuz, both
of which are located in Berlin-Kreuzberg. Gunter Kennel plays
in the latter on the three-manual romantic organ produced by
E. & G. G. Hook, Boston, in 1870. Because of the multiple
uses of his churches, Gunter Kennel is permanently confronted
with many diverse musical styles. Often his concert programs
include stylistic contrasts and multiple interpretations, and
are sometimes even combined with scenic elements. Although versed
in the field of authenticity in musical performance, Mr. Kennel
is not a purist, but rather a musician who is also inspired by
modern aesthetics and theological issues and perceptions. In
1998 he produced the CD “passion” (LA 75951), which
includes several cross-over pieces in a trumpet/saxophon/organ
arrangement. In 2001 followed the first recording of the Hook-organ
with music of Mendelssohn, Schumann, Brahms, Reger and Liszt.
In Sept. 2002 he was appointed Landeskirchenmusikdirektor, i.e.
chief supervisor for sacred music of the protestant, “Landeskirche” (i.
e. diocese) of Berlin and Brandenburg. In that function he produced
further CDs on historic organs in the Brandenburg area.
Since 2006 he is also president of the Evangelische Direktorenkonferenz
für Kirchenmusik, which is the assembly of all Landeskirchenmusikdirektoren
and the heads of the departments of Sacred Music at the music
academies in Germany. —Wardie Mannix

St.
Andrew’s (Re-) Connects Program — Sunday, Oct.
24th
We’re hoping to repeat the success of last year’s
St. Andrew’s Connects Program where almost 70 volunteers
connected with about 180 parishioners. The goals of this

has for parishioners to become in-volved, and to ask for a completed
pledge card.

inviting volunteers to attend a brief training session (either
Oct. 17th or 21st), and plan on making three home visits on Sunday,
Oct. 24th. This is a great way for you to contribute and make
new connections. — Jessica Del Prete • 781-424-8705

Village Church Luncheon
Professor and author Sally Merry to speak on Human Rights at
St. Andrew’s
We are very pleased to announce that our guest speaker for the
luncheon and lecture that we co-host with The Village Church
will be St. Andrew’s own parishioner Sally Merry. The date
for this year’s traditional lunch exchange between the
two churches is Tuesday, Oct. 12th from noon to two and will
be held in the St. Andrew’s Parish Hall. We will enjoy
a delicious meal served by the Bargain Haul Kitchen staff of
B’Dots Café followed by Professor Merry’s

Sally Merry is a Professor of Anthropology at New York University
and is currently on sabbatical. While here in Boston, she will
be a Visiting Fellow at the Human Rights Program of the Harvard
Law School and Visiting Scholar at the Harvard Anthropology Department.
Sally was a professor at Wellesley College in the Anthropology
Department for many years until 2005 and has published numerous
articles and books on women’s human rights, the role of
law in urban life in the U.S. and law and culture in the Pacific
region. We are honored and thrilled that Professor Merry will
share her expertise with us.
