Walk
for Hunger (Sunday, May 4):
St. Andrew's
parishioners have supported this fundraising walk for many years
through both sponsoring and walking. The Walk for Hunger is the
country's oldest continual pledge walk and the largest one-day fundraiser
to alleviate local hunger. Last year alone, pledges from The Walk
for Hunger funded 400 emergency food programs in 126 communities
across the state. During the same period, these soup kitchens and
food pantries provided more than 42 million meals for hungry people
in our state. There are three ways you can help:
- Sign up to
walk any part (or all) of the 20-mile route and ask people to
sponsor your effort. To enroll, go to the Project Bread web site
(www.projectbread.org)
and click on Register or Donate to the 40th Walk for Hunger and
then click on Register now. Under Join a Walk Team select New
Participant and type in St Andrew's Wellesley (no period in St).
You are invited to walk with the St. A's team but are not required
to - the total amount raised will be credited to the team. You
can walk at your own pace and start any time after 7:00 am.
- Sign up to
volunteer - if walking isn't your thing, there is still a need
for volunteers on the day of the walk - both for Project Bread
and the St. Andrew's team.
- Sponsor a
walker or the St. Andrew's team - go to the Project Bread web
site (www.projectbread.org)
and click on Register or Donate to the 40th Walk for Hunger and
then click on Donate to a participant. Select Search for a team,
and in the box type in St Andrew's Wellesley (no period in St).
From there, select our team and follow the instructions to make
a donation by credit card. Checks or cash can also be left in
the church office as a contribution - please mark it clearly as
a Walk for Hunger donation.
We are arranging
rides to and from the Boston Common - joining the team as a walker
or volunteer allows us to plan rides. Joanna Horobin and Cam McCormick
will be at coffee hour to answer questions. We already have 7 walkers
committed, 4 drivers, and closing in on $3,000 in pledges!
Join the effort now with your time or pledge support!
Ongoing
Opportunities:
Partnership
with Christ Episcopal Church - Bay St. Louis, MS: The
Vestry of St. Andrew's agreed to a three-year commitment to offer
support and partnership to this parish, which is located on the
Gulf Coast. The church building and grounds were devastated by Hurricane
Katrina and our support goes to help in the rebuilding of the church
and assisting the parishioners in re-establishing their lives in
the area. The Outreach Committee coordinates communication and activities
associated with these efforts, including travel to do hands-on work.
Partnership with St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church—Boston,
MA: St. Andrew’s has supported St. Stephen's
church in many ways over the years—Food Pantry, Summer Program,
after-school programs, Thanksgiving dinners, Christmas gifts for
seniors. There are many volunteer opportunities with St. Stephen’s,
both weekly and occasionally.

Cooking for Rosie’s Place
Calling all cooks! Every third Thursday of the month, St. Andrew’s
provides ~150 meals to Rosie’s Place, a sanctuary for poor and
homeless women offering both emergency and long-term assistance
to women. Join in on the fun at the St. Andrew’s kitchen at
8:30 am. |
Salvation
Army, Framingham: Roughly every month, volunteers
from St. Andrew's serve and or make dinner for the homeless at the
Salvation Army in Framingham.
Ministry with the Homeless: St.
Andrew's sponsors a variety of service projects with the homeless
through two diocesan programs, CityReach and Ecclesia Ministries
in Boston. These programs provide opportunities to worship with
and minister to the homeless.
Our Little Roses and El Hogar Service Projects: St.
Andrew's sponsors several girls and boys attending the Our Little
Roses and El Hogar School in Honduras. Service projects for El Hogar
include letter writing, and sending clothing and supplies to the
school.
Christmas Party for Children: Every December
St. Andrew’s gives a Christmas party for children living in
Wellesley's subsidized housing. Many volunteers from the parish,
along with their children, help with planning and giving this party.
Walk for Hunger: Every May we organize
a group of members from St. Andrew's to participate in a sponsored
20mile walk from Boston Common. Donations support Project Bread,
which helps to feed the homeless in the greater Boston area.
Epiphany School in Dorchester: This tuition-free
middle school offers a full range of support services to children
from disadvantaged backgrounds. The school provides a safe, nurturing
environment which allows the students to thrive academically and
personally. St. Andrew’s contributes resources – both
financial and time commitments – to support this school based
on Episcopal prinicples.
Wellesley Food Pantry: This vital ministry
is an interfaith effort in our town to support those in need of
basic food items. Housed in the Wellesley Hills Congregational Church,
we provide food donations, financial contributions, and volunteers
who provide hours of support to the effort.
Heifer Project: Every year during Lent,
the church school children collect money to contribute to the Heifer
Project, which supports people around the world by giving them livestock
to establish a sustainable way of life. By giving them animals which
can produce goods (milk, eggs, etc.) to be sold, it helps to improve
people’s lives and lift them out of poverty.
Other Projects: The Outreach Committee
also supports a number of other initiatives for the church. Among
these projects are: the Christmas Mitten Tree (warm mittens and
hats for children); Germaine Lawrence School in Arlington (holiday
gifts for 11 - 17 year old girls); Episcopal Relief and Development
(ERD offers emergency assistance in times of disaster; rebuilds
devastated communities and offers long-term program development
solutions to fight poverty); Refugee Immigration Ministry (RlM addresses
issues and education initiatives in the immigrant community).
