Worship Committee
Chaired by the Vestry person for worship, this committee serves as an advisory group to the Rector, addressing such issues as liturgy planning, music, and special worship services.
Prayer List
The parish community prays each week during all worship services for people who are ill, hospitalized, or have special needs. Anyone, parishioner or not, may be included on this list.
Lay Readers and Chalice Bearers
Trained volunteers read Scripture and the Prayers of the People at worship services. Chalice bearers and
also serve regularly during communion. These parishioners and our Lay Eucharistic Ministers who take the Sacrament to the sick and to shut-ins are licensed by the Diocese.
Acolytes
Young people in sixth grade or older serve as acolytes, assisting the clergy during worship and leading the processional and recessional march each Sunday. New acolytes are recruited each year, trained in September, and join teams of four to five other acolytes under the supervision of a team leader.
Ushers
Ushers make people feel welcome and comfortable at worship services. By extending a smile and a handshake at the door each Sunday, ushers show that St. Andrew’s is a friendly and caring place. Ushers help people find a seat, collect and present offerings, prepare the chancel rail before communion, direct communicants to the rail, and assist clergy as needed during worship services. Ushers also deliver altar flowers to shut-in parishioners after Sunday services. Children often assist as ushers at our monthly All-Parish Eucharist.
Altar Guild
The Altar Guild prepares the sanctuary, transept chapel, and children’s chapel for all worship services every week. Members serve on teams, working for a week each month. Duties include dressing the altars, setting out silver and glassware, laundering linens and vestments, and straightening up after each service. New members are recruited and trained each fall and work for their first year in an apprentice relationship with experienced members. The Altar Guild also manages a memorial flower fund to which parishioners may contribute to commemorate an important date or event in someone’s life. This can be done at any time during the year and also at Christmas and Easter.
Flower Guild
The Flower Guild is responsible for arranging flowers for
the main altar, the transept altar, and the children’s chapel
each Sunday. It also decorates the church for the festivals
of Christmas, Easter, Pentecost, and on St. Andrew’s Day.
A love of flowers, some knowledge of floral arranging, and
a commitment of one month each year is all that is required
to join.
